Overview

Shim was a high-profile signing for the Pirates out of South Korea.  He’s a big guy who throws four pitches — fastball, slider, curve and change.  As a high school pitcher he attracted a lot of attention because the fastball could hit triple digits. In his brief pro debut, he threw 95-98 mph. His curve showed very high spin rates.  He’s working to improve his change.

2023

After opening in the FCL, Shim was expected to spend much of his debut season with Bradenton, but it never happened. Shim left his second game with a strained pectoral muscle. The Pirates supposedly considered the injury minor, but returned in time to pitch just twice more. In the eight innings he threw, he was mostly dominant, allowing just three hits and three walks, and fanning 13.
