Overview
Pichardo wasn’t drafted out of high school in the Bronx, but he signed as a free agent with the Phillies. He’s an infielder who’s played all three positions, third and short more than second. He’s shown modest power and has a decent walk rate, but he strikes out a lot and hasn’t hit for average. The Phillies traded Pichardo to the Padres at the start of the 2022 season and San Diego sent him on to the Pirates in order to reacquire Jackson Wolf two years later. At this point, he’s primarily been employed as a utility infielder.
2019-21
The Phillies initially sent Pichardo to the Dominican Summer League, and he hit very little there, although with good walk and K rates. After the 2020 season was canceled, Pichardo saw only limited playing time in 2021, mostly at the rookie and Low Class A levels. Just before the start of the 2022 season, the Phillies traded Pichardo to San Diego.
2022-24
Pichardo spent the first half of the 2022 season in Low Class A, where he struggled, with a .595 OPS and strikeouts in nearly a third of his plate appearances. The Padres moved him up to AAA in July and, in 29 games, he hit better, with a .745 OPS.
In 2023, Pichardo spent most of the year in High Class A, hitting for more power and with a good walk rate, although he continued to strike out a lot. His line there was 267/387/410. He also got into 15 games in AA.
The Pirates acquired Pichardo in a trade for Jackson Wolf at the start of the 2024 season and he spent the year at Altoona. He divided his time between second, third and short, although he had some error problems at the latter two spots. He batted 252/306/373, with a poor BB:K ratio of 27:128.
