Overview

Griffin was generally considered the best high school prospect in the 2024 draft, and arguably the player with the highest ceiling. Despite his size, he has great speed; he stole 87 bases in 88 tries in his senior year, and the one time caught was an attempt to steal home. He has a great deal of power. The one question about him is his hit tool. He hasn’t had trouble making contact so far, but there’s some concern about his swing being long and possibly stiffening up as he’s filled out. Some scouts think he can stay at short and be an above-average defender there, while others think he’ll move to the outfield, where he could play center due to his speed. He also has a well-above-average arm. He’s pitched in high school, reaching 96 mph on the mound. The Pirates selected Griffin with the 9th pick in the draft, which was exactly where he was ranked by Baseball America and MLB Pipeline. He had a commitment to LSU but signed the day before the deadline for a bonus just a little more than $300,000 above the slot value of $6,216,600.

2024
