Overview

Hernandez was 18 when he signed and was not a prominent signing.  He’s settled in as an organizational catcher, filling in at any level as needed.

2019-23

In his debut, Hernandez split the catching duties on one of the Pirates’ DSL affiliates with two other catchers.  He didn’t hit much and showed no power at all, but he did throw out 53% of base stealers. After missing the pandemic season, he was the most frequently used catcher on an FCL team that was loaded with catchers and also saw some time at first.  He had a rough time at the plate, showing no power and striking out at an extremely high rate.  He threw out 32% of base stealers.

In 2022, Hernandez filled in briefly in the FCL and at both class A levels. In 2023, he did the same at both class A levels and for Indianapolis, getting into 16 games overall.
