Overview
Jarvis was the Pirates’ second consecutive college senior draft pick, which probably reflected a need to save slot money for their earlier picks. Jarvis wasn’t listed among the top draft prospects by draft publications. He played short regularly as a senior, but mainly played second and outfield in earlier years. He hit just decently in his first few college seasons, but added power and batted 367/417/544 as a senior. Jarvis has good speed, and stole 21 bases as a sophomore and 16 as a senior. He signed a few days after the draft for a small fraction of the $315,400 slot value.
2021-22
The Pirates initially sent Jarvis to the FCL, where he had little trouble with the pitching. He moved up to Greensboro near the end of the season. He had great success as a base stealer. Jarvis spent time at short, second and all three outfield positions. In 2022, Jarvis opened the season at Bradenton, then moved to Greensboro for July and August, apart from a two-week stint filling in at Indianapolis. He didn’t hit well at any level, although near the end of the season he had an outburst of five home runs in eight days. Jarvis primarily played second, but spent time at short, where he was very error-prone, and third.
2023-24
Jarvis played for Greensboro through late July 2023, although he missed some time with injuries. He split his time more or less evenly among second, third and short, and saw a little time in the outfield. He had solid walk and K rates, and hit ten home runs in the equivalent of less than half a season, but it’s worth noting that all but one came in Greensboro. Jarvis moved up to Altoona for 28 games late in the season and hit very little.
In 2024, Jarvis opened the season with Altoona and started off 2-for-28. The Pirates promoted him to Indianapolis anyway, but he got only limited playing time there. In AAA, he had a .651 OPS in 71 plate appearances. The Pirates moved him back to AA at the end of July. He finished with a .366 OPS in 99 PAs for the Curve. Jarvis mostly played second and third at both levels.
