Saw that Jordan Lawler getting called up by Dbacks. After shoulder surgery, seems like he's got his bat going again. Some on this board wanted him rather than Hank. He's likely to move off SS to 3B.

think Marcelo Mayer is the one everyone tossed up with

IIRC it was split betw Lawler and Mayer. Lawler was initially the #1/1

prospect and was joined in Spring season by a couple others. Funny, Mayer was just shut down due to left shoulder inflammation that he was likely trying to play through. So both these SS along with Hank dealing with the injury bug! Where's those posters who thought drafting a pitcher was too large of a risk???!!

Sullivan is having a nice night, 6 innings 8 k's so far. Only 1 run so far. Now 7 innings, 4 hits, 1 run unearned, 9 k's, 0 walks

Crews is 1-4 with two strikeouts.

He did score the unearned run. Greensboro came out swinging tonight.

On the day Bubba is promoted to AA, Jordan Lawler gets called up to the show.

Forever linked in the minds of 2021 draft strategy nerds.

Crews 0-5 with 2 k's vs Altoona yesterday. Hitting .182 with a .525 OPS, while playing RF. There's going to be an acclimation period, but a RH corner guy who pounds the ball into the ground doesn't seem like a 1-1.

I watched him in the College World Series and maybe I just had bad luck, but he seemed to me to be very susceptible to pitches away and I never saw him drive the ball. Unlike Skenes, he did not strike me as a generational talent. On the other hand, how can so many scouts be wrong?

The issue for me with college bats is that they get started so late. At Crews’ age Juan Soto was a superstar in the major leagues. Same with Harper. Same with Acuna. Jackson Holliday is twoyears younger than Crews and he’s in AAA after destroying AA. The fact that he’s having so many problems early in AA is concerning in that context.

Lines like "generation talent" are media-driven far more than scout. It's all about building hype and driving engagement. Nobody gives a shit about accurate but unexciting draft prospect articles.

From what I was able to gather the true scouting contingent gave this kid all star upside.

Crews did have problems later in the college season on pitches on the outer third and high and tight. Earlier in his college season he was driving the ball to right. It appeared to me he was trying to hard to pull the ball later and lost his approach. I haven't watched very many of his at bats in pro ball yet.

Some of the uber-fast promotions of guys in their first taste of professional ball seem a tad rushed. Call me old fashioned, but I still think that even the best college players are better served starting and staying in High A for a little bit.

At a minimum, I don't see the slightest bit of evidence that this process *helps* player dev in any meaningful way.

Short of a mechanical flaw that legitimately needs ironed out against lower-level comp, I don't think it really hurts either.

Mostly just a PR game, really.

I agree with this but also think the Nats rushed Crews a bit, he should have went to high A before double A, his strikeouts were still high even though he was crushing mistakes in low A. Shaw, Langford and Teel weren't being overly challenged at high A and probably needed the higher level of competition to keep improving. The Halos probably didn't help Schanuel by being overly aggressive in promoting him but did probably stunt his power development and finding the barrel more consistently. I still think he will become a doubles machine and hit around 20 homeruns a year but could have used more seasoning in double A, his eye and plate discipline are mlb ready though.

Schanuel is such a freak, I love it.

I know the chances a trade for him is close to zero but I still feel he has the best chance to be a generational hitter.

Over .320 batting average

Around .450 on base

With slugging around .520

A 200 hit a year guy

Around 20 homers with 30+ doubles.

Always loved the John Olerud/Mark Grace First Baseman types, this kid is a real throwback.

I wonder if the level of competition matters to some degree. As good as the SEC is, AA is still a good size jump in status. Beyond Crews, the example that sticks with me is Leiter. That dude didn’t even get any feet-wet starts in A or high A. He wasn’t exactly known for his control at Vandy either, so maybe there was something mechanical that would or could have been identified at high A.

Honestly, that first exposure to pro life is more of an adjustment than we’d know. Coupled with a big jump in competition, maybe it becomes more about survival than development for some guys. l

Somebody - maybe Dreker, always a strong candidate - made a comment the other day that really made me think, in that maybe the reason clubs are skipping advanced bats over A-ball is because the quality of A-ball has become so atrocious.

I very much tend to think along the lines you are, but it does beg the question at this point. Seems like you gotta sift through A LOT of shitty at bats in order to get a few against comp that's actually meaningful. Whether that's better or worse than just getting beat up in AA for a while, I sure as heck don't know.

That’s a really good point on the quality of the lower minors. It also gives me pause to Termarr with his walks. Is he really selective? Or is he just seeing so many non competitive pitches thrown at him?

On the other hand, I’m anxious to see Johnson get to AA because he’s going to be facing pitchers with better control and will get more pitches to hit. Then maybe we’ll see more of his reputed bat to ball skills.

Believe me I wish I did. I have a good friend at BA that I always talk baseball with, and he told me this summer that one of his grizzled old scout contacts loves Chandler, thinks he will be a star, and refers to him as redneck Otani.

I can see them opening 2024 with something like this. Will be great to see some actually intriguing prospects as our upper level depth. Promotions will have to be earned. I hope to see a real competition for those #4/5 spots between FA, Ortiz, Priester, Falter, Contreras.

MLB: Keller, FA, Oviedo, FA, Ortiz

AAA: Priester, Contreras, Falter, Jones

AA: Skenes, Solometo, Chandler, Harrison

Insane AA rotation but selfishly want them all in AAA so we get the statcast treatment.

Nice moves of both Bubba Chandler and Jase Bowen being promoted from A+ to AA to finish the season. I mentioned yesterday the possibility of having Skenes, Solometo, and Harrington at AA next year and the possibility of Bubba Chandler. With this promotion, it looks like a lock for those 4 to start at Altoona in 2024.

Tough loss for the Marauders last night, and Lakeland continued winning, so chances of BRD to make the playoffs are now slim and none! What's left to see? Will 21 year old OF Rodolfo Nolasco achieve a 20/20 season of doubles/HR? He is currently 21/19, hitting his 19th HR last night with an exit velo of 104.7 mph. And, will MI Jesus Castillo reach 100 Walks for the season? Currently with more Walks than Strikeouts at 99 Walks/94 K's.
