For the first time this season, a little more of an under-the-radar prospect in the Pirates system took the mound.
After striking out 88 batters in 69.2 innings last year in Bradenton, partially as a teenager, some started to take note on right-handed pitcher Carlos Jimenez.
With a devastating change-up, mid 90s fastball and a big breaking curveball, Jimenez was a prospect that a lot were watching going into 2022.
There wasn’t much known as to exactly what kept Jimenez off the mound this season, but it wasn’t until July 28 that he finally found his way back playing.
The box score reads that he pitched long than he did, but WTM was at the game, and started the game with a strike out before walking the next couple of hitters before being pulled.
He’s got some incredibly intriguing stuff, with the potential to have at least three above-average pitches, it will just be a matter of control for him.
With Carlos Santana getting trade to the Milwaukee Brewers, the Pirates recalled Josh Palacios from Triple-A Indianapolis to take his roster spot. The outfielder had picked up a few big hits, as well as a great play defensively in his previous time in the majors.
After getting optioned back to Indianapolis earlier this month, Palacios played in seven games, picking up nine hits - four of which were home runs.
While he is a left-handed hitter, with Santana getting traded, Connor Joe may end up with more reps at first base, which could open up more playing time in the outfield for Palacios.
