Pirates also released Cam Junker, who was the biggest culprit in the nightmare that's been the Altoona bullpen. Junker looked pretty good before this year, but he had a bad time in the AZ Fall League last fall and that seemed to do him in. His numbers this year are so bad I can't print them on a family site.

Hopefully Chapman, who was pitching well for Gbo, will do better.

Finally let the fans back into the seats after lightning. Was like COVID baseball for a couple innings....weird.

Has any Pirate breakout been aborted quicker than 2024 Lonnie White.

Week 1: .321/.387/.893 (241 wRC+)

Week 2-8: .098/.222/.174 (28 wRC+)

Another 0-fer yesterday during a game in which his team plated 13 runs.

I began my ten-day stay in Indy Monday, where I will be going to all of their games during that time. If anyone has anything specific you would like me to look for, let me know.

If you're looking for a nice relaxing time with excellent steak, try St. Elmo steakhouse. Right downtown.

I'm not sure I brought dressy enough clothes. That place looks nice.

I had to stay in Indy for work a couple of times...Good place to expense a dinner. It's very nice and their shrimp cocktail is fantastic.

Justin Meis struck out the last 4 batters for a save in Altoona. The announcer called it a slider, but it looked like a curve/slurve with vertical movement. Will this pitch play in upper levels is the question.

Why you hate Sullivan and Ashcraft?!?!

Ben's going to trade them all plus a couple lower level pitchers and Priester for Holliday and Heston. Then he's going to draft all pitchers in the draft with the exception of Montgomery with the first pick lol.

Kiley has another mock. Mr. Tibbs. He says industry belief is this will be a college pick.

Expand full comment

Doyle had his new mock yesterday, he had us getting Montgomery with Wetherholt and Hagen Smith still available. Don't think it'll play out that way, I'm hoping for one of the top 8 to fall. Kinda want Yesavage but Tibbs or Cam Smith will do if no one falls lol. I wouldn't mind one of the high school bats but don't want a prep arm with pick 9.

Doyle? Don’t know who that is? I find it hard to believe that three of that group would be there when they pick. Yesavage was hospitalized with a collapsed lung, hope the dude is ok.

Yeah, I don't see it playing out like that either. I'm hoping one of the teams in front of pick 9 goes for a prep player. I'd be happy with any that falls. I can't see a scenario falling is Condon or Bazzana other than a drastic circumstance.

Doyle is with FSS, usually pretty good. I'm sure his mock will change a couple more times. His rankings after the first 30 or 50 are usually better than mlb and Law.

Yesavage is supposed to make a full recovery, probably will pitch in the ncaa tournament, the last I heard.

The draft is such a hit-and-miss thing even at the top and especially this far down. Personally I’d hate to see them draft a prep pitcher given all the risk involved and particularly with all their needs in the outfield and at first but you never know who’s gonna develop. Just take your best shot and hope.

I’m leery of prep arms that early, fine with it after the first (they almost all slide on draft day). Drafting for need is always risky because that seeps into scouting a player. For instance, if most of the good college bats are gone and there’s a very good college arm there, take the arm. BUT, the strengths of this draft and where they are slotted in the draft, it looks as ifthere’s a very good chance they can get a good bat at a position they need.

Were any of the other college bats in play?

Not among that kinda consensus top tier (Condon, Bazzana, Jaglione, Monty, Wetherholt, and Kurtz). He also added that Cam Caminiti’s convo starts at 9.

Robby Hammock has his hands full with the roster in Altoona. Not saying they are bad, but how many position players are actually "prospects"? Seven are 26 or older which does not bode well for any of them making it to MLB. Therefore, placeholders at best. Siani was promoted from A+ to AA a few weeks ago, and possibly 3 or 4 others from A+ should be promoted to AA. However, are there players at Bradenton who can backfill for the loss of position players at A+?

Altoona is loaded with guys who have some ability but didn’t develop. It’s not exactly a monument to the Pirates’ scouting and development. Or maybe it is . . . .

Expand full comment

Hard to be negative because many of us got to that point of "some ability, but didn't develop". And, for every one of them, you see a kid come along like 13th Rounder Charles McAdoo who should be one of those guys who could be promoted to AA shortly. The bat definitely plays!

Not sure about throwing Hayes right back in there without rehab at-bats.

The only time I don't golf bad is when I haven't swung a club for a long time. Maybe the same concept will hold true for Hayes.

So no pitcher for perez? Nice

The days off allow for them to delay the need for a SP until next week.

Will they get a 27th man for the doubleheader? Seems likely they would add a reliever.

Expand full comment

They could but with the pen well rested and the expectation that Jones and Skenes can give us at least 5 of the 7 innings, I don't think there is a need. In fact, they may have some concern that the relievers need to get an inning in else they'll go from at least Sunday to Friday without pitching.

I'd probably bring Davis up--Indy to Detroit is a short trip and Davis can PH for Koch or Tellez (assuming they both start game 2). There's a good counterargument to not disrupt Davis's routine in Indy, but he'd be my choice.
