I feel like ending this season around ~.500 would do wonders for the young kids and org in general in building momentum towards the offseason. Then, signing shohei will really be the cherry on top!
I think even hovering around the current mark and finishing 76-86 give or take would be a step in the right direction, especially given the starting pitching situation.
If they did not get any closer to .500 it will still be a positive year. That's the upside. The reality is that it could not have gotten any worse than it has been for the previous 3 years.
Still patchwork in the Rotation, but Keller and Oviedo is a good start. Then we have Bido, Contreras, Ortiz, Priester, and Falter, followed by Jared Jones, and a lot of others. If we are going to try to get an experienced SP to add, the time to get that person is now, not after the season ends. And, a lot will depend upon the work we see between now and season's end, and in the AFL.
The only downside to the Pirates’ win is that games like Monday are unsustainable. A team can’t consistently use seven pitchers and be successful. The bullpen will be blown out.
Yet the lack of starting pitching depth has put the Pirates in this position.
Mitch Keller and Johan Oviedo are the only two members of the rotation who the Pirates can count on to get them through more than two turns of the batting order. And Keller is 0-4 with an unsightly 9.97 ERA in four starts since making the first All-Star Game of his appearance last month.
The Pirates are lucky to get even five innings for their other three starters – Bido, rookie Quinn Priester and left-hander Brady Falter,
I have a couple issues on Perotto’s point if that’s what one will call it.
First off, any wins are good ones. So I’m not gonna be picky. They beat a CY front runner, and that’s cool and difficult to do. As for using seven pitchers for it, sometimes you have games like that and they’re ugly, but they won. Is anyone using last nights win as a template for how to be successful? I doubt it.
As for the rest of the staff, yeah, it’s been a rough year. Some of it is an organizational failure with key arms going backwards (Ortiz and Ro). Some are guys who aren’t here anymore (Hill). But they’ve lost three guys (Bru, Burrows, and VV) to TJ surgery, which seriously depleted the depth by the end of the April. Those six mentioned, plus Keller and Oviedo were the top 8 arms in terms of pre-season rotation and depth. Some of it is bad development, but a lot of it is bad luck.
I guess makes sense with jones coming up, they really do need innings and he should still have ~50ip to give. We have a few guys that could probably fare pretty well piggybacking each going 3-4ip but more than that is recipe for disaster
Hope not. They are a long ways away in Ft. Myers today. They're home Thursday, Friday and in nearby Sarasota Saturday. I'm in Bradenton and would really love to be there for his debut.
He was supposed to throw a live bullpen on Sunday (which I assume happened since I haven't heard otherwise), then start an FCL game. My guess would be Saturday, since I don't think they put him on a five-day schedule right away, but I can't rule out Friday.
Agreed, maybe a few starts with the florida teams (FCL and bradenton) then get his feet wet at altoona? Feels aggressive but seems like he should be able to handle it
The FCL Pirates last game is two weeks from today, however they lead their division so they could go to the playoffs. I think you're right about a few starts here between the two teams.
Jones would be an odd one to call up since he wouldn't be available today. Maybe he starts on Sunday in the TBD spot, but it feels like they wouldn't be calling him up for a bullpen role. Keller today, Priester tomorrow, Falter Saturday. Jones pitched on the 4th, so he isn't available for any role today...I also don't think it would be wise to call someone up right after they issue a season-high five walks
Maybe a fresh arm? Could also be a sink or swim chance for Hatch, if they are happy with De Los Santos they might just want to give him a bit of a break in AAA since they can store him there until later.
I was at the game yesterday and it was probably the best I've ever seen him. Neither hits were cheapies as both were pretty hard hit. His triple would have been a double for most guys but Bishop can really fly. He also made some nice plays in CF. Your positive feelings are warrented.
where's reilly? figured he would've pitched by now. probably hurt i guess lol
From an email buddy:
Since the Giants series that ended July 16, the Pirates have a record of 10-9......that's a .526 winning percentage over the past 3+ weeks.

Long way to go, tho, with only two (one?) solid SP?

From Perotto, who for once makes a good point?

I just hope that they’re not rushing him.
wonder if skenes pitches today. he was assigned to the FCL team yesterday.

wish i still lived in florida so i could see him pitch
I think john said yesterday it might be friday or saturday, but i dont know anything beyond that

very exciting! i imagine he won't be there long at all. maybe one start?

Jared Jones heading to the show!
Nope. Looks like Hatch and Selby which makes more sense on a number of levels
Ehhh, damn tweets. I sure was excited for Jones
cool - I hope they let tank be his catcher
Oh shit, for realz?

I seen a tweet, Jones and Hatch getting called up. Bido and DLS being sent down
They need arms. See my Perotto comment above. In a perfect world, Jones would finish at Indy.
Interesting, dont know why hatch up instead of YDLS, but excited for jones
Maybe a fresh arm? Could also be a sink or swim chance for Hatch, if they are happy with De Los Santos they might just want to give him a bit of a break in AAA since they can store him there until later.
I agree, YDLS was looking pretty good in my opinion
Per mackey, bido and yerry got some hugs
Seeing Braylon Bishop make top hitter is the best way to wake up in the morning.
If he could just make average contact, he's value would skyrocket. The other tools are there.

Hes probably looking at round 3 of the FCL next year i would think
Still crazy he was a top 10 in "too early mock drafts"
Well i choose to believe thah too early mock drafts are law so hes destined to be a top 10 overall prospect /s
Bradenton, I bet.
i still have hope. next year he'd basically be a junior out of college. BELIEVE
*insert ted lasso believe gif*
Thanks as always for the info BnP!
I'm just waiting for a bunch of promotions for it to be outdated already lol
In org or out of org promotions?
Both? Lol
Just anything to make your work slightly inaccurate!
Doesn't take much!
Agree. 😛😛😛
