This is partly why I briefly proposed the possibility of fully agreeing with Cutch on a 2024 contract but waiting to make it official until the first day of spring training (or whenever players can officially be moved to the 60 man DL opening up a spot). It also surprised me that Rowdy was signed so soon for similar reasons and because IMO losing him to whoever was Plan B would not be that big of a deal. It's not that we are losing future Cy Young winners, but they are at the point of removing serviceable players from the 40.
Not surprised - but my family will remember his debut. We saw it in person in St. Louis while visiting family. That family - Cardinals fans - didn't really enjoy that lopsided game but we sure did - even the storm after his five perfect innings complete with a tornado warning that funneled all the fans to certain parts of Busch Stadium. He didn't return after the storm and he never found success again. Too bad!
It seems he will be best served for his own development in somebody's AAA rotation once he clears or is claimed. I didn't see a fit on the MLB roster but never like to lose a pitcher.
I hope so, one area I'll give BC credit for is the last couple spots on the 40 man. The talent has improved near the last man on, I almost expect the player being dfa'd to be claimed or traded.
Just wish there was more separation between 30 and 38 lol.
Why no talk about Jared Jones? He will be pitching in his age 23 season in 2024, and the Pirates have been priming him for the MLB Rotation since 2022:
If the Pirates planned to keep him in the minors in 2024, why the promotion to AAA and 15 Starts, 82 IP? 23 Starts 123 IP in 2022, and 25 Starts 126 IP in 2023, the K/BB/9 numbers are excellent, and for some reason he is not being seen as a possible #4 or #5 SP at the MLB level in 2024? Is this some sort of strange developmental plan? I've heard all the "only 2 pitches" BS, but if he can throw only 2 pitches and post K/BB/9 numbers like that, and average over 5 IP per start, who cares? He's obviously a very talented and smart pitcher - he will develop and use that 3rd pitch - whatever it may be - on his terms. So far he has been pretty damn good at doing things at his own pace.
2. I don’t think he’s as close as some think he is. He has the talent, but just needs to work on things. After seeing how some of the prospects have done in majors, I’m in no rush to rush him
I understand your point, and would not want to rush any pitcher, but they pitched this kid 82 innings at AAA (after 42 at AA) last year and they never took their foot off the gas. In fact, in his last 3 starts at AAA in September he had 17.2 IP, 11 Hits, 18 K/4 BB, 2 ER, 1.02 ERA. Does that sound like someone they thought would return to AAA in 2024? Not in my opinion. If that was the case, he would have been throwing 2 or 3 innings per game just to keep the arm loose.
According to BTV, Ray has a substantially negative trade value. We don’t really have an underwater contract to offer back, as the Mariners did with Haniger. So to balance the scales the Mariners would have to throw in a ton of money or attach prospects. Aside from the Pirates likely unwillingness to take on any substantial portion of Ray’s salary, the Mariners probably preferred an underwater Haniger and DeSclafani to fill all the holes they’ve created slashing payroll.
It is what it is, as they say in Denial-Land. Who needs good pitching anyway? Ortiz allowed 19 hits in 6.2 innings in the Dominican? That can’t be right can it? Six hits in 19 innings would be okay but it’s hard to see how three hits an inning is impressive.
Yea, that whole season was crazy. I saw him in Richmond. Only remember saying, 'Oh wow, he throws 100,' but that's about it. Nothing else really stood out. Always seemed weird that so many were buying in over four games outside a much larger sample size.
WTM - we’re the only team in baseball w 4 injured players on 40 man. Dodgers have 3.
We have the most limiting offseason situation in baseball.

Exactly… Kranick is gonna get picked up. We did his whole rehab and wanted to keep him
From a Mackey tweet, Mitch Keller on a contract extension, "We haven't talked about anything this off-season "
Didn’t we hear the same thing about Reynolds a couple of months prior to him signing?
Yep, was just hoping that was the big announcement for tomorrow.
Max K got the dfa.
I guess this is the earth-shattering move that Mackey was expecting this week.

Might still be in Indy in the rotation there.

Meh not too surprising
Me either

2022 A+ 26 Starts, 123 IP, 4.62 ERA, 10.4/3.7 K/BB/9
2023 AA 10 Starts, 44.1 IP, 2.23 ERA, 9.5/3.2 K/BB/9
2023 AAA 15 Starts, 82 IP, 4.72 ERA, 10.9/3.7 K/BB/9, FB 95-99

1. This was a look at only players on the 40 man

Keep him away from Marin as long as possible lol.
Im sure he will factor in at some point, but not to start the season. That nearly 5.00 ERA at AAA isnt gonna get it done
Wonder if we could have traded for Robbie Ray. Suwinski and Holderman? Would it have been worth it to trade Reynolds for Ray straight up?
According to BTV, Ray has a substantially negative trade value. We don’t really have an underwater contract to offer back, as the Mariners did with Haniger. that rotation is a big yikes
Long time no see!
still in off-season mode. I'm ready for the season to start though! I hope everyone here has been doing well
Good stuff AM !!
Just two I view differently
I have Falter DFA when Perez signs for reals
AND
Counting on Burrows for 2024 is too much to ask
Besides not pitching well or long enough at AAA
he faces a herd of pitchers to be evaluated
I think they error on the side of caution
Late April TJS W/ 14-16 months recovery puts timeline
between late June thru August
Brubaker, Jones, Priester, Wolf, Ashcraft and Skenes will all be in the mix
Unsure about guys like Sully, Shortridge and Nicolas SP rumblings
One thing for sure they need to get all 4 AA Horses to AAA and ready for 2025
2024
1. Mitch- better ink him before he's a 2nd time all star
2. Martin- explain how winning feels
3. Marco- POLO
4. Acquisition- Cuban their currently tied to would be nice 3yr/20M,
W/ 3M at signing spread out over 3 years
5 In house- Roansy, Max, Quinn, Luis
PEACE
I am very intrigued to see what ashcraft brings this year

#Sarcasm
4 game debut pointed out, should have pointed to sell high

Jarred Jones would seem to be closer than Ashcraft IMO. No?
This is all based off of the 40 man roster. Ashcraft is on it, Jones isn’t.
Much closer. Ashcraft never topped 3 innings with Altoona.
