Overview
Aguiar is an athletic player who fits in the middle infield. He isn’t a big guy, but he was gaining notice by the time the Pirates signed him as he got faster, his arm improved and he showed some potential to drive the ball. He was listed as a shortstop when he signed, but it looks like he’ll probably play second.
2022-23
Aguiar played second regularly in the DSL in 2022. On offense, he mainly drew walks — a very great many of them — but he did show a little power. He also put his speed to use on the bases, with 18 steals in 23 tries. Auiar got off to a very good start, batting 314/415/429 in 11 June games, but he slumped after that. He was only a little past 17.
The Pirates sent Aguiar back to the DSL for 2023 and he made very good progress. His OPS went from .715 to .856. His walk rate dropped a lot, but it was still good. He spent about a third of his time at short, after playing second almost exclusively in 2022.
2024
Aguiar spent 2024 in the FCL, playing second almost exclusively. He didn’t hit as well as he had in the DSL, batting 241/337/287. He had a 26% K rate, high for a player who showed little power. In 23 games at second, he had no errors.
