Overview

Randall is a control artist who relies heavily on deception and on locating his fastball.  The pitch sits in the low-90s and has reached 96.  He has a very good change and a fringy slider. The big question with him will be whether his stuff plays at higher levels.  The Pirates acquired him from Arizona after designating Diego Castillo for assignment.

2021-22

Arizona started Randall in low A in his draft year. He threw 19 innings and had little trouble with the hitters there. In 2022, he went to high A and had a 3.82 ERA while walking only 2.1 per nine innings. His K/9 of 8.6, though, was below league average, and he got hit hard at times. Opponents had only a .295 OBP, but they hit 14 home runs and slugged .452, well above the league average.

2023-24

The Pirates traded Diego Castillo for Randall after the 2022 season, but he had Tommy John surgery before the 2023 season started. He returned in late May 2024 and worked his way up to Greensboro. He had a 5.63 ERA there, although his 1.30 WHIP was much better. He had a very low walk rate of 1.2 BB/9 and a somewhat low K rate of 8.9 K/9.
