Overview

Along with Osvaldo Gavilan and Luis Tejeda, Campana was one of the Pirates’ three biggest international signings in the 2018-19 signing period.  He has grade 80 speed and is good defensively in center. He’s struggled to develop with the bat due to problems with offspeed and breaking pitches.

2019-20

Campana got off to a good start. He was hurt at the beginning of the DSL season, but didn’t miss much time.  He got off to a slow start, going 3-for-27 in his first seven games, but batted .313 after that.  He did, however, strike out in a quarter of his ABs.

2021-23

Campana spent two years trying to adapt to the pitching in full season ball. He went to Bradenton to open the 2021 season, but after a good stretch from mid-May to early June, he collapsed at the plate.  From June 6 through July 11, he went 8-for-79 (.101) with one extra-base hit.  He walked a lot, but had a very difficult time picking up breaking balls and offspeed stuff.  He went to the FCL in mid-July and hit fairly well there, although still with a lot of swing-and-miss.

In 2022, Campana returned to Bradenton, playing semi-regularly in center, and made some progress, but not a great deal. He batted 210/333/323 and struck out in nearly half his ABs. He did walk a lot.

Campana was on the injured list for about the first half of the 2023 season. The Pirates initially assigned him to the FCL, then moved him up to Bradenton. He got into only 19 games with the Marauders and another nine in the FCL. He drew a lot of walks with Bradenton but continued to strike out in close to half his ABs.

2024

Campana spent the first half of the season with Bradenton, his fourth season there. Around mid-season, the Pirates moved him up to Greensboro. He missed a little time with an injury and also spent some time on the development list, but mainly he just didn’t play much. He got into just 28 games for the Marauders and 16 for the Grasshoppers, many of the latter coming off the bench. He put up a .669 OPS at Bradenton and went 1-for-20 for Greensboro.
