Overview
Hernandez was the top prep pitcher in the 2025 draft pool and was one of the highest-upside players available. Baseball America had him ranked second and considered him for the top spot. MLB Pipeline ranked him third, while FanGraphs had him ninth. At 19 when drafted, he’s a little older than most prep draftees. Hernandez’ fastball sits in the mid-90s and has registered triple digits. His best secondary pitch is a change that BA rates a 70 and Pipeline a 60. He also features a curve with very high spin rates and a hard slider. Hernandez throws from a three-quarters angle and has above-average command. One thing that’s consistent with the Pirates’ recent pitching picks is Hernandez’ athleticism and the fact that he’s a two-way player; he’d have been a legitimate draft prospect as a shortstop. He’s a Vanderbilt commit and the slot value for the pick is $7.56M.
