Overview

The Pirates signed Maguire out of Australia just before spring training in 2020.  He was one of their more significant signings in the 2019-20 period.  Maguire has above average speed that may allow him to stay in center, and a good arm.  He also has above average bat speed and may have some power potential. Due to injuries, though, his career has never really gotten off the ground.

2020-23

Maguire would have debuted in the pandemic season, but instead went to the FCL in 2021. He had a difficult season.  He played two games in late June, then sat out with an injury until the end of July.  After playing semi-regularly in August, he missed September with another injury.  When he played, he struggled to hit, although he did walk a lot.  He mostly played center.

In 2022, Maguire returned to the FCL, where he divided his time more or less equally among the three outfield positions.  He made some progress at the plate, especially with his K rate, and seemed to be turning a corner in July, when he posted an OPS of .748.  In August, though, he went just 4-for-28. In 2023, Maguire opened the season on the 60-day injured list. He played in three FCL games in mid-June, then went back on the injured list and didn’t play again.

2024

The Pirates sent Maguire to Bradenton in 2024 and for much of the season he played semi-regularly, dividing his time among the three outfield positions. He got off to a good start at the plate, showing much-improved power, but he slumped after a couple weeks and batted just .132 after May 14. In mid-August, the Pirates reassigned Maguire to the FCL to allow them to assign some of their 2024 draftees to Bradenton, effectively ending his season. He finished with a 175/287/338 line, with strikeouts in a third of his at-bats.
