This whole outfield thing drives me crazy. This is the organization of Waner, Cuyler, Clemente, Parker, Bonds …. In the early 70s the major league outfield was Stargell, Oliver, and Clemente, with Parker and Zisk at AAA. The Pirates once epitomized impact outfielders. The current complete inability to develop a single bona fide outfield prospect to the point that it’s routine to play infielders in the outfield is beyond belief.
I keep hoping that we’ll one day see an outfielder playing at an all-star level in the Pirate tradition. Apart from Cutch, my hopes keep getting dashed (Midre Cummings, Danny Cliburn, Trey Beamon, Chad Hermansen, Gregory Polanco), but I never give up. So Lonnie White and Shalin Polanco, you’re next up.
I think that was the selling point in drafting and acquiring shortstops. They are all athletic enough to learn the outfield. My guess is they all could learn it, but the Pirates haven't really tried. I do think Bae is much better than he gets credit for out there.
Keep in mind that loads of these dudes are leftie batters, too. That will sell at a premium when they have to part with someone like Cheng down the road to seal a trade.
Yes, that's the feeling I've been longing for. Instead of "I hope two of Jones, Bubba, Solo, Skenes, and Harrington work out", it'll be "Man, when Bubba is ready, what do you do? Whose spot does he take?"
The moment they're trying to figure out how to fit a Lonnie White Jr. with a 1.200 OPS in Indy into the lineup, they'll be in a good spot. Instead of thinking THIS time Alford will work out after another 7 game power spree in Indy.
And Alford wasn't even close to the most embarrassing of the collection of nobodies. I mean, there at least was kind of a thesis for Alford based on his athleticism. Some of those dudes like van Meter had no earthly business playing at the MLB level.
4 years in the majors on three different teams with over 300 games played, starting in 215 of them. Looking to broaden my horizons by playing center field for the first time, contact me at...
I read an article somewhere where they claim that other than speed, Joe has very good metrics in the outfield strongest being his first step and arm. So maybe is worth a look especially as a weak side platoon to Jack.
Anticipation and quickness beat speed. The best speed does for you is help you recover from a bad first step. Bae in CF is old-school NFL-style catch-up speed in its worst form. The best approach is to not need to catch up in the first place. And the best way to do that is to anticipate and have a good initial burst based on your anticipation.
My suspicion is that they want to keep Joe and try to make sure he can be tolerable in CF. From a roster construction standpoint, that let's them keep an option on Bae.
According to statcast, in his first inning he was in the 95's four times and had three other pitches in the 94's, but in his second inning he topped out at 94.5 and only had three pitches in the 94's. His pitch makeup changed somewhat, so who knows if that was by design (maybe working on deception?). But yes, I'll be a lot more optimistic about Priester if he can sit 94-96 with his sinker.
There are a lot of mlb pitchers including quite a few starters who sit 92-93 so I don't think that is a death sentence. What would happen to the population if all women really believed "bigger is better", lol.
Missed the end of the game Peggy goes BOOM!!! For The Win!!!!
Can any of these 2nd base prospects play OF?

Just once I'd like to find a guy who can play hitter.
Davis might be your guy
We never just draft a hitter. They always seem to play a position.
Playing a position is a nice bonus.
Do you mean actually play the outfield or be stationed out there.
They've been trying that for a decade now lol
Exactly, so trade for a legit OF and let's roll. 4/5 guys for 1 spot. Move some pieces and improve the team.
sweet jesus
It seems like every player who needs to be on track for a 2025+ competitive window is at or past where they need to be at this point.
Peggy HR? It's sealed. I'm booking my Buctober flight
Damn, if Cheng only had some power.
If Cheng had power he wouldn’t be here.
He looks big the couple of times I’ve seen him on TV. Is that an illusion?
He's short like Termarr, but they both have larger lower halves.
Yes
Can't wait for the dueling 30/30 seasons when Cheng joins Cruz in the majors.
I can't wait for a team that's deep enough that it'll have to figure out what to do with Cheng when Termarr arrives.
Is this what it feels like to cheer for a team with actual organizational depth?

Yeah, it's gonna be different.
Cheng goes BOOM !!!!!!!
Shelton trying to give Moreta some company, lets Hernandez throw 31 pitches in one inning in early spring.
Oneil goes BOOM!!!!!!!
115 off the bat!
Joe in CF, switched with Olivares. They’re groping for answers out there, with Ben blowing off the offseason.

Agreed, that’s why I’m not bothered with him having some reps in CF, rather there than 2b!

Ben's plans: "They're not THAT bad out there. At least it's not Rowdy in CF"
Wait.
Cruz just hit one way out of here. Been waiting for that.
Falter looks bad. Below avg stuff and command. On a major league team he’s AAA depth.
Priester looks good so far. The run was scored by a guy he had struck out, but he got a bad call on a checked swing and then walked the guy.
Is there any realistic hope for him if hes only sitting 92-93?
According to statcast, in his first inning he was in the 95's four times and had three other pitches in the 94's, but in his second inning he topped out at 94.5 and only had three pitches in the 94's. The problem is that Priester's curveball is what got him to the majors. And no one seems to be a buyer on it playing off of his fastball.
If he stops throwing that dead zone FF at the top of the zone

You have to have one, preferably two well above average breakers to make that work. Otherwise his a 6th starter
I was simply pointing out that not being Paul Skenes doesn't mean you can't pitch in the majors.
I’m mostly seeing 94.
I think we are going to like this jared jones fellow
He’s hit 100 at least 3 times, inc 101.
He's trying to show Skenes how it's done...
his cleats look like Gargamel´s boots

🤣🤣🤣
I can only imagine that will boost his abilities
suppossedly, the angels are short on infielders and Mickey Moniak is out of options
maybe they´ll throw in bob kipper
I think they will keep Moniak and let Jo Adel go.
Sorry. The tech guys say it'll be another two weeks before the trade-o-matic is back online.
Kipper's are pretty salty.
