Burns was fantastic last night. Holding velocity late in start. Locating his pitches. Love the curveball he has to mix into things now. Even if it's just for show.
Yea Hartle isn't someone I would take too early. Didn't get a chance to see Ben Hess this weekend. Watched Trey Yesavage though, he's working his way up. Think if I were to make a list right now of college pitchers, would be interesting at who's moved up and down so far.
I'll add him to the list lol. For as much as a fan I am of Braden Montgomery, haven't checked out Texas A&M too much. Need to fix that a bit. Got the four game split screen going right now though lol
I missed the last few innings. I'm with ya, really telling the 2 guys that's been playing since 2019 in college had no problem figuring him out. Still a fairly high floor guy but I don't think I would take him with the compA pick. Just not enough ceiling and more of a backend rotation floor than a 3.
Back to being fastball-slider after looking like he was committing to the curve last outing, too. Can't for the life of me figure what he's working on at this point. Just pumping seeds down the pipe.
An approach that Jared Jones also appears to be taking and one that objectively points to a massive organizational failure. This is why they absolutely suck at development.
Roansy Contreras has already proven to be a failed big league starter as a two-pitch guy with middling command, which is exactly what he showed today.
Does he really believe less than 1 mph of velo over short stints is his path to success?
Does anyone in this organization have a plan for teaching these guys to actually pitch?
You realize that the organization can tell them to do things, but sometimes it’s just physically impossible. It has nothing to do with the organization.
It's why I really like guys like Davis and Skenes, they're honest with themselves and look to work on their weakness instead of playing off their strengths. Always working and trying to get better.
Left it up a little higher than you probably want but yeah, liked that inning from Ro. Fastball had some movement, the bite on that slider when he keeps it low is gonna get a lot of misses
He's a very different type of pitcher than Quintana. I'm hoping Gonzalez can be this year's Quintana, but I was much more confident about Quintana coming back from his injury than I am of Gonzalez.
I am not throwing in the towel on Marco yet. I want to beilieve after missing most of last year, he is still a little rusty. Then again my expecations for him are to be a number 4 or number 5 innings eater.
I liked the way he looked his other start. It was no messing around, I think he got 9 outs and gave up a solo shot for the only batter to reach base. The Pirates have had a pretty good success rate when bringing in veteran pitchers.
His control was pretty good. He did have a hit by pitch no real hard contact at all. Just some singles Williams booted two but I’m assuming they were unearned runs. Also, Oliveres throw a ball for a force to second that Alcanterra dropped which would’ve been an out.
My beef from major league hitters in general is that most veterans don't run hard out of the box. I liked Hayes going for 2, but if he ran hard out of the box he would have been safe easily.
He looked fine at Pirates City. So did Bednar and Cutch. My guess is they are on a secret load management plan. To answer your question though, I haven't heard anything of an injury.
Greg Brown just noted that Grandal hasn’t caught lately and said “he’s obviously not 100%” for whatever that’s worth, which coming from Brown isn’t much.
With the way the Pirates offense struggles I can't see the point of keeping a glove only guy like Williams especially at the expense of a spot for Peggy and with a guy like Triolo who can play so many positions well.
I know we are viewing this as 4 guys fighting for 2 spots, but I view it differently. I think it is Triolo vs Alika (based on the left side of the infield) and Peggy vs Nick on the right side. I see Triolo and Peggy being the favorites by a lot at this point.
Nice play by the Pirates using Jared Triolo at SS in one game, and Liover Peguero at SS in the other. Having solid players who can hit, field, run, and play multiple positions makes the lineup that much stronger. And only one SS (Cruz) has more than a year - 1.110 days of MLB Service. I think Peguero has 80 days of MLB Service, and Triolo has 78 days of MLB Service going into 2024.
Sean Sullivan and Connor Sadzeck were reassigned to MiL camp. Burrows was optioned.
Anyone else see that the Reds top prospect Marte got suspended 80 games for roid usage?
Don't wish ill on anybody, but what a dips***.
Yeah. I do not wish ill on anyone either. So stupid any more.
centerpiece of the Castillo trade, too, if I remember right. shucks, what a shame. ;)
Is it wrong for me to say (from what I have seen ), I prefer Lamb over Tellez.
I really like lamb. Kebob, shawarma, whatever. Never tried Tellez but hope it's much better than it looks on the plate.
Nice!!!
Selby looks like he's pitching himself off the 40 man.
His results just don't seem to match his stuff, or what I perceive as his stuff. Sometimes the results speak for themselves.
Plus stuff, 30 control. Allows for a lot of what he's dealing with
Off topic but the ivy league old guy transfers for Duke are hitting Hartle pretty good.
Bravo and Miller
Yea I'm watching the game. Really surpsied this much offense going on. Logan Bravo has been a guy all season.
Hartle hasn't overly impressed me this season. I can see the floor with the command/control of the five pitches, but just not really a fan.
Burns had no problem with Bravo and Miller, a lot of K's. Don't think I want Hartle at all, his ceiling is just to low.

Prager another 6 innings without giving up a run. No walks 11 k's and 1 hit, facing Rhode Island though lol.
I'll add him to the list lol. For as much as a fan I am of Braden Montgomery, haven't checked out Texas A&M too much. Need to fix that a bit. Got the four game split screen going right now though lol

Yep
Had no clue that is actually a stream of the other game lol
Atlanta just subbed in a, presumably real, person name Nacho Alvarez with an .856 OPS. I love Spring Training.
Any relation to Nacho Libre?
80 grade name for sure.
No video of game so I'm skeptical. Could just be Ronald Acuna rehabbing with a mustache lol
Tres Gonzalez getting numero tres for his jersey uni is definitely awesome lol
Was it just my imagination or does Tres run differently than most players? It looked like he was flying without even trying.
He definitely glides out there. Moves really good
Cutch!
Like the movment and being mid-90s for Ro, just still not getting the Whiffs. Nine swings, zero whiffs so far. Still a solid two innings so far.
Now he's leaving too much over the plate and everything getting beat to hell
Back to being fastball-slider after looking like he was committing to the curve last outing, too. Can't for the life of me figure what he's working on at this point. Just pumping seeds down the pipe.
If I were him I wouldn't be trying to work on stuff. I would be auditioning my best for a roster spot.
An approach that Jared Jones also appears to be taking and one that objectively points to a massive organizational failure. This is why they absolutely suck at development.

Is there a single adult in the room right now?
Is there a single adult in the room right now?
Hilarious!!
Let the kids dictate their own development, they said. The kids know best, they said.
You realize that the organization can tell them to do things, but sometimes it’s just physically impossible. It has nothing to do with the organization.
If neither pitcher has the ability to throw more than two pitches with better than Grade 40 command then they do not belong in a starting rotation.
It's either a failure of development or usage, I'll accept either one.
I think you nailed it.
It's why I really like guys like Davis and Skenes, they're honest with themselves and look to work on their weakness instead of playing off their strengths. Always working and trying to get better.
Here here. I am a sucker for people who hate to lose more than they love to win. I look at Jared Jones that way.
Amen to that.
That's how Keller turned his career around and also what I respect about Quinn Priester, there just might not be enough juice there to squeeze.
Yea the fastball can move all it wants, it ends up where it does it gets hit 10/10 times
Ro looked pretty good, the homerun looked like a decent pitch. Sometimes you get the bull, sometimes the bull gets you.
Left it up a little higher than you probably want but yeah, liked that inning from Ro. Fastball had some movement, the bite on that slider when he keeps it low is gonna get a lot of misses
Hung the pitch on 0-2 count. Just cannot do that. Should have been a chase pitch.
Yeah agree he left it up, but it was on the inner third, hitter did a good job keeping it fair.
Super solid day for Perez. Worked both sides of the plate. Pulled the string with some change-ups.
Martin Perez for Cy Young. You heard it here first.
I’m just hoping he’s closer to Quintana than Dick Mountain.
He's a very different type of pitcher than Quintana. I'm hoping Gonzalez can be this year's Quintana, but I was much more confident about Quintana coming back from his injury than I am of Gonzalez.
Extend Martin, extend Martin…
I have been impressed with him thus far. Marco... ouch on the other hand.
Yea he's been super solid this spring. Gonna need that from him to start the year.
Feeling much more confident he will be able to hold his own than marco
Wish there was a way to see how that start went for Marco today other than the stat line.
Edit: Hadn't checked his line lately, looks like he's getting roughed up a bit this past inning
The radio call was on MLB at bat. I listen to the whole thing so far.
His control was pretty good. He did have a hit by pitch no real hard contact at all. Just some singles Williams booted two but I’m assuming they were unearned runs. Also, Oliveres throw a ball for a force to second that Alcanterra dropped which would’ve been an out.
I agree with that, Marco has a decent line today but still a lot of contact.
Let this be Hayes from now on!
Like the hustle from Hayes, almost got me to type it.
I'm ok with Hayes not hustling out of the box on that dinger!
My beef from major league hitters in general is that most veterans don't run hard out of the box. I liked Hayes going for 2, but if he ran hard out of the box he would have been safe easily.
Have I missed something? Is there a reason Grandal hasn’t been playing? He only has 3 ABs so far this spring. Is he injured?
He looked fine at Pirates City. So did Bednar and Cutch. My guess is they are on a secret load management plan. To answer your question though, I haven't heard anything of an injury.
Greg Brown just noted that Grandal hasn’t caught lately and said “he’s obviously not 100%” for whatever that’s worth, which coming from Brown isn’t much.
State-run media usually doesn't say something without the team's say-so.
He already made the team!
Good question, haven't seen any Carter Binns either, maybe they have a small injury or something.
Yeah Shelton would rather have Grandal break down during the season rather then the spring so he doesn't have to over think it, lol.
Triolo playing short against the Braves today. I think they're planning for him to be the super utility at every infield position.
I don't understand how a guy whose only asset is defensive range and nothing else is even in the conversation.
I was dutifully informed by some folk here that he was incapable of playing SS because he had some errors in couple games 2 years ago in the minors.
I also liked seeing Cheng beat out a little squibbler. Speed never hurts.
I'm glad to see him getting an opportunity.
Me too. The Pirates do need someone who can play the position well and who does not hit like a schoolgirl.
I'm surprised Cruz isn't in either lineup.
