So Mlodzinski is having forearm tightness? And Holderman is sick. Let’s hope both are ready for opening day and Mlodzinski’s isn’t anything serious.

Where is the real Contreras and what have the Pirates done with him? Woah!

Hitters are just hainesing away.

Hey, it took Haines almost the whole st to get the hitters back to where he had them before. He's been working hard.

Sketchy starter, solid bullpen, and a winnable game slipping away with nearly zero run support. No need for the rest of ST. The team is in mid-season form.

Yeah, the good news is three key bullpen guys had good innings. Bad news is Falter, and the offense being in full-on Haines mode.

Ben's lobbing lefty strategy is getting torched these days.

Not looking good for Falter.

I thought first inning stuff was decent, just a couple very good hitters. He threw too many pitches to Springer which set up too long of an inning.

Looked better after the first few batters.

I'd take Jones over Falter of course.

Might this be Falter's last stand as a bucco?

Bailey's last falter.

Falter is tall enough that he should be an excellent rebounder. Unfortunately the Pirates have him trying to pitch.....

Michael A. Taylor making his Pirates debut. Andrew McCutchen also playing in the field

O/U 16 Cutch starts in the field this season? I'll take the under

Under.

WAY under I'd imagine

more or less than last years 8?

Less

Under

Expand full comment

I will bet the under, but I am hoping for the over. Having the DH open for guys like Henry Davis, Oneil Cruz and Rowdy Tellez could give the Pirates more options.

Expand full comment

Maybe they are playing Cutch in the field since they are finally playing a Gold Glove caliber player in center, lol.

Expand full comment

Probably didn't like seeing Joe let that Rizzo pop up drop in lol but I imagine it would center more around wanting to have the ability to let other players get some DH at-bats while also no taking Cutch out of the lineup for those ABs.

Expand full comment

If I looked the stats up right the Pirates got 30 homers and 82 rbi's from center field last season and while they won't get that from MAT he should get to quite a few balls that the guys playing center didn't get to last year.

Expand full comment

I'm looking forward to what should be average to above average defense in the outfield as a whole, with actual consistent above average offense from the corners. We'll see what MAT brings as a whole. It's rather impossible to be, but so long as he's not Hedges bad offensively, it should be an overall net gain for the length of the roster offensively and defensively.

Just like the Pirates though - wasting all of those games Connor Joe played as a Center Fielder in college, the minors, and in MLB - ZERO. That's a BIG OLD 0, but why can't he be able to be a + DRS in Spring Training 2024. Classic Ben Cherrington!
