I’m sure I’m not the only person who’s noticed that, as they’ve started seeing more major league pitching, the offense has increasingly shifted into Cherington Mode.
Hits have been hard to come by, but some of the veterans are actually doing what needs to be done and hopefully there are younger players who will watch and learn from them. Pham and Cutch are 1,2 in number of Walks on the team, 11 and 10 I think, and both have more Walks than K's. Endy Rodriguez is third with 9 Walks/5 K's. If the hits are not falling, it is a way to help the offense - get on base!
Was it OK St or Wichita St that used to teach the front shoulder drop into the zone to get a HBP? Working Walks and taking one for the team!
My opinion is no but that is a guess. Certainly seems like the type of player that somebody would at least claim even if they think they may drop him later and hope that nobody else claims them and they then can keep in their system. The current Roansy Contreras path.
Everyone is trying to trim their rosters or add someone who's been on 60-day IL, so it would seem the timing is right that Cheng would not be claimed. Unlike Roansy, Cheng has no MLB experience to attract much attention, and 5'7" is not the profile for most MLB teams. Just my opinion, it's a way for us to clear another spot on the 40, we're going to need several spots.
All valid points and I don't have a strong opposite argument. Just my gut / opinion thinking somebody even at this time of the year would grab him even if they think they may drop him 7 days later. I certainly would not place money on him being claimed... well maybe a whole dollar.
Mayza’s contract falls under that rule that he can be released before opening day and we do not owe him the $1mik salary? Bc of not enough service time in the league
It seems like when the Pirates have their almost "A" line-up, Cruz is usually missing. When we put out our "B" line-up, Cruz is in it. Not complaining, just curious what the logic is...... especially since Pham was talked about being a mentor.
Supposedly, they feel he hasn’t had enough ABs vs. LHPs and they figured he’d get more in the MiL game yesterday. In a MiL exhibition a ML guy will generally bat in every inning.
My take is that they brought in Pham to do Shelton's job of holding people accountable. Why not fire Shelton and hire a real manager and then get a real OFer? Because if they fail this year, Littlefield can fire Shelton as proof that he is "trying" and use Shelton as the sacrificial lamb to keep his own job secure for one more year. If they fire Shelton last year (as most assumed that they would), then there is no one else unto whom Littlefield can push the blame.
As far as I can tell, half his job has been a concierge who recommends good restaurants on road trips, slaps guys on the back, and hands out booze to celebrate every minor personal player achievement. The other half of his job is to repeatedly tell the media how "thoughtful" (his favorite word) everyone in management is and state that the players need to execute better after every loss.
Palacios is gone for Stewart, wentz/Mayza for borucki and I assume another position player for Harrington, unless they move someone to 60 day IL. Maybe they trade delay to open a spot.
The Astros released Jalen Beeks. Maybe we can bring him back.
HEY!
Pirates dfa’d Palacios, added Stratton to roster, and optioned Davis, Yorke and Cook.
The DKPS guy finally caught up. According to him, it's Stewart and Triolo at 1B, Bae vs. Jack for last OF spot.
That means one more roster spot has to be cleared. Really two unless they're gonna be stupid and let Borucki leave.
Feel great for Stratton. I thought he was done after that horrific injury.
That means the the 26th spot goes to either Bae or DJ Stewart.
After thinking about this it has to be Stewart. Triolo is the only other guy on the roster who played any 1B at all this spring.
I think you are right about Stewart, but theoretically Suwinski or Endy could also play first.
Frazier has.
I hadnt noticed. I try to not notice Frazier. Its pretty easy actually.
Very surprised that Endy beat out Davis.
Weirdly, they chose the better player this time.
maybe this means Hank can start trying out first base
Or Rowdy Tellez when Dumdum acquires him.
Dumdum would. Rowdy would tell him to go pound mayonnaise tho.
NOW they give Gorski a shot at 1B.
I have to admit that I forgot that Stratton is on the team, and I like Stratton…..
I’m sure I’m not the only person who’s noticed that, as they’ve started seeing more major league pitching, the offense has increasingly shifted into Cherington Mode.
Yeah not hitting major league pitching has been a reoccurring problem.
I don’t think is fair that we have to face major league pitching…

My first thought when I saw they were no hit today.
Got down to the 26 man roster guys and, offense disappeared.
Cherington Mode = Can't even get the ball out of the IF.
Would Cheng pass thru waivers.....I'm thinking he would.
The fact he still has options I’d say yes. Cuz it wouldn’t be like you’d have to keep him in the majors if you claim him. And he’s still young.
Yes that he'd be not claimed (passed thru) or yes he'd be claimed and added to another team's 40-man?

It be nice to get a hit or 2.
I guess I asked for too much.
Shelton #analysis: "Mayza gets a lot of ground balls" and then he gets 3 fly ball outs. 😣
We could use a Machine in our lineup.
Pitching machine for our lineup, much agreed.
Mayza’s contract falls under that rule that he can be released before opening day and we do not owe him the $1mik salary? Bc of not enough service time in the league
I hope we keep wentz instead of him
I definitely think they should keep Borucki over him. I like Wentz as a guy that can still be part of the future whereas mayza is a one year guy

Hoping bae gets a few weeks in the majors while they realize that Frazier and Pham don’t have any more in the tank
The problem isn’t them not realizing those guys are toast. The problem is them not caring.
It’s obvious their toast
They think they’d they’ll help the young guys blossom
But they could instead be assistant coaches like vogelbach
Probably ha some something to do with players association grievances too

Shelton has a job??
As far as I can tell, half his job has been a concierge who recommends good restaurants on road trips, slaps guys on the back, and hands out booze to celebrate every minor personal player achievement. The other half of his job is to repeatedly tell the media how "thoughtful" (his favorite word) everyone in management is and state that the players need to execute better after every loss.
Number 1 reason I want Jason Kendall as manager
I hope our next gm is named David Bigfield. Id even take a Curt Mediumfield.
Good point on your post.
Looking like Harrington will open in the rotation. Good on him.
Great news! No service time manipulation. Anxious to see if his Greg Maddux lite approach will play.
Harrington is bumping Heaney for Monday's start. For once, Shelton not catering to a vet.
Wondering which future hall of famer is gonna be bump off the 40?
Palacios is gone for Stewart, wentz/Mayza for borucki and I assume another position player for Harrington, unless they move someone to 60 day IL. Maybe they trade delay to open a spot.
Palacios is likely just gone,. No options so he was destined to be dropped regardless of any positional battle (unless he actually won that battle).
It just so happens . . . .
I don’t see cuts announced anywhere, but the MLB 26 and 40 has changed.
Strzrzrzrzl hasn’t exactly made a case for himself.
I think you forgot an ñ and a ê.
I'm trying to resist the temptation to call him Strizzlewhizzle.
Or the dreaded 60 day.
Dislike…
Good point……boo to you!
So many to choose from. Wouldn't miss Shugart.
