Overview
Capra started off as a shortstop when he was drafted, but quickly evolved into a utility player. He’s shown decent to good hitting ability, with some gap power. He’s had very good plate discipline in the last year or so, just fair before that. The Pirates acquired Capra for Tyler Heineman.
2018-20
Capra made it to AA quickly. After signing in 2018, he played exclusively at short in the New York-Penn League and in low A. He hit for some gap power and did just a decent job of getting on base. In 2019, the Jays jumped Capra all the way up to AA, where he played mostly second and third, with a little time at short and in center. He didn’t hit much, putting up just a .605 OPS. He didn’t play in the pandemic season.
2021-23
In 2021, the Jays sent Capra back to AA and he had a big year, even hitting for good power, batting 327/396/548 in about half a season. He missed the first month of the season and a couple weeks in June with injuries. Capra played mostly third, with a little time in left and at short. He opened the 2022 season in AAA, then got a callup to the majors in late April. He was only with Toronto briefly, then went back to AAA. Capra missed all of June and July, not counting rehab, with an injury, then returned to AAA for the rest of the year. He had a solid season there, hitting 283/378/403 with good plate discipline. In the field he played mainly third, short and left. The Jays removed him from the roster in the off-season and he opted for free agency, but he signed a minor league deal with the Jays a day later.
Toronto sent Capra back to AAA to start the 2023 season. He struggled badly there, batting .167, and at the end of April, the Jays sent him to the Pirates in exchange for Tyler Heineman. Capra hit well at Indianapolis, with an .851 OPS. He had 24 walks and only 27 strikeouts. At the beginning of August, the Pirates called Capra up. He spent just over a month in the majors, going 3-for-18, then got optioned back to AAA.
