Overview

Ramos is a tall, thin righty who’s always been about projection. When Oakland signed him, he threw in the upper-80s. A year into his career he was traded to the Pirates he began throwing in the low-90s. He lost time to elbow soreness and the pandemic, though, so five seasons into his career he hadn’t pitched that much. The Mets selected him in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft and, according to FanGraphs, he started throwing from a much lower arm slot. His fastball began sitting in the low- to mid-90s with a great deal of tailing action, and he also threw a sweeping slider. The new motion left him very wild at times, but hitters didn’t have much success getting the ball in the air against him; in 251.1 career IP, he’s allowed only eight home runs. The Pirates signed Ramos as a minor league free agent for 2025.

2018-22

Ramos pitched reasonably well in 2018 in the DSL, putting up a 3.15 ERA and 1.40 WHIP. After the trade, the Pirates sent him to rookie ball for 2019, but due to elbow soreness he got into only four games and didn’t do well. He didn’t pitch in 2020, then went back to rookie ball in 2021. He got hit fairly hard and had a 1.59 WHIP.

Through 2021, Ramos had been primarily a starter, but in 2022 the Pirates sent him to Bradenton and he relieved in all but one game. Control was more of a problem, as he walked 5.6 per nine innings, but he also struck out 10.2. The Pirates left him off their AAA roster after the season and the Mets selected him in Rule 5.

2023-24

The change in his delivery appeared to work out well for Ramos in 2023, which he split between high A and AA. Wildness was more of an issue, as he walked 5.8 per nine between the two levels, but he fanned 10.5. That all included an ERA of 1.47 and a K/9 of 11.8 in a dozen AA games.

Ramos’ opened 2024 back in AA and he mostly dominated through half a season there, with a 1.65 ERA and a much-improved 3.6 BB/9. A promotion to AAA didn’t go as well as Ramos’ BB/9 more than doubled to 7.4. He struck out only one more batter than he walked.

Ramos became a free agent after the 2024 season and signed with the Pirates.
