Overview
Hernandez originally tried to find a contract as a potential, power-hitting outfielder. He started to show more on the mound, though, and the Pirates signed him in March 2022. He was expected to be pretty raw as a pitcher.
2022-23
Pitching mostly in 2- and 3-inning relief stints, Hernandez had a solid debut in 2022, especially for a guy new to pitching. He gave up eight earned runs over nine innings in a three-game stretch starting in late July, then had a 2.33 ERA over his final 19.1 IP, with just three walks. Overall he had very good control and allowed opponents just a .588 OPS. The Pirates nevertheless sent him back to the DSL in 2023. He again pitched well, with a 1.06 WHIP, 2.6 BB/9 and 9.2 K/9.
